Fumigation

Fumigation is the method in pest control that completely fills the area (e.g. sea container or silo) in question with gaseous pesticides or fumigants in order to suffocate or poison the pests around.

Phases:

Fumigation generally involves the following phases:

  1. Area intended to be fumigated is covered (e.g. with plastic/PVC coated canvas material) or sealed (e.g. holes) to create a completely sealed environment. Area is marked with appropriate (danger) labels.
  2. Fumigant (e.g. phosphine) is released into the space to be fumigated.
  3. Space is held for a set period (at least 7 days, depending on the used fumigant and outside temperature) while the fumigant gas percolates through the space, acts on and kills all infestions in the product.
  4. Seal is opened. Space is ventilated so that the poisonous gases can escape from the space, and render it safe for humans to enter.
  5. Fumigated area is now safe and pest free.

Concentration of gas in the air, inside the fumigated area as well as its surroundings, is continuously measured during the fumigation procedure.

Fumigated area is marked with appropriate danger signs. NOTE! Silos from both top and below. Period, during which the air is dangerous (poisonous), is marked to the danger sign.

Fumigation is a hazardous operation. It is a legal requirement that the operator who carries out the fumigation operation holds the official certification to perform the fumigation as the chemicals used are toxic to the most forms of life, including humans.

Fumigations in Finland:

All fumigation procedures completed in Finland are done with the products registered (approved) by Tukes (The Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency).

Gafta GTAS certificate:

Antitec has achieved a Full Member status of the GTAS Fumigation module in the GAFTA Trade Assurance Scheme.

  • The Gafta Trade Assurance Scheme (GTAS) is available to all companies operating in international grain and feed trades. It covers each stage of the trading and logistics supply chain from farm in the country of origin to delivery at final end-user in the country of destination. GTAS is a HACCP based scheme designed to maintain consumer confidence in the handling and delivery of safe food and feed. It assists organizations to comply with EU and UK food and feed legislation, and provides full traceability in the supply chain, maintaining the integrity and reputation of the products.

Our references:

Over the years, we have done fumigations to:

  • Level storages
  • Sea containers (TEU, FEU) (20 and 40/45 feet)
  • Silos
  • Vessels

Our products:

We use both pellet and plate type of fumigation products. Our pellet fumigation product is Degesch Phostoxin (ex Detia GAS-EX-P) and our plate fumigation product is Degesch Plate. We have (as a company) exclusive rights in Finland to use those products.

Pellets use aluminum phosphide (AlP) as the active substance. The outgassing of the pellet begins after a brief delay once the fumigation product meets product or moisture. The outgassing rate depends on the temperature and humidity levels.

Plates are formulations containing mostly magnesium phosphide (Mg3P2). Plates begin to outgas immediately after contact with air or moisture. Therefore, they are individually packaged in gas-tight aluminum bags.

Finally:

However, fumigation is a very safe procedure especially when it is executed by professionals in close co-operation e.g. with the silo/ship personnel.

If your product require fumigation procedure or you need additional information about it, please contact us. We will help you with pleasure!
